Ministry calls for Team Girl Malawi project support
Ministry of Education Principal Secretary Rachael Chimbwete Phiri has called on stakeholders to help fund the Complementary Basic Education (CBE) programme.
Speaking in Lilongwe on Tuesday, she said Transformational Empowerment for Adolescent Marginalised Girls in Malawi (Team Girl Malawi) conference marked the completion of Team Girl Malawi project which applied the CBE approach.
She said the CBE, which is partly funded by the Ministry of Education, will benefit more marginalised groups.
“With the successes the Team Girl Malawi Project has registered, we are hopeful that many will emulate the example and we can have many partnerships to sustain it,” said the PS.
Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the event, Link Malawi country director Harold Kuombola said the project enrolled 6 300 learners in three cohorts of 5 250 girls and 1 050 boys.
“These learners have moved on to undertake other activities towards becoming transformed citizens and also earning a living in the community, but also changing the communities they live in,” he said.
The project was implemented in Dedza, Mchinji and Lilongwe districts.
The five-year programme which was run by Link Malawi in partnership with the Malawi Government and funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Commonwealth Development Office also sought to increase access to education for marginalised communities through alternative education approaches.
